Luckily, we’re here to help! Consider this your “Boxer Parent Survival Guide.”
These are our Top 10 Tips for preparing for your bundle of…slobber!
-
Seriously consider the commitment. When you bring a fur baby into your home, it is important to understand the impact it will have on your life. You are their entire world. Are you able to commit to the exercise and attention level that a Boxer requires? Can you handle a breed that is late to mature? Boxers often do not settle down until they are 3 or 4.
-
Do not underestimate the financial commitment. Boxers are prone to cancer, and other health issues- do you have the time, and the means for medical care if they require it? This is potentially a 12 year financial commitment- from finding pet friendly landlords, to replacing chewed shoes (or couches), and possibly expensive vet visits.
-
Are you ready for the DROOL? Boxers are essentially 70+lbs slobbering lap dogs. They can be messy. They jump to greet you, give you wet kisses, snore, pass gas… and leave slobber marks in their wake. If this is appealing to you… keep reading!
-
Are you ready for the SASS? Boxers talk back- literally! Boxers are full of personality, and are very smart. They require diligent training, and sometimes do have to be reminded of their manners in their quest for a good time. Are you willing to educate yourself? Are you willing to commit to obedience classes if needed? Do you have the patience needed for their behavioral training?
-
Are you ready for the ENERGY? Is your yard fenced in? Is your grass ready for the intense daily zoomies it is about to endure? Your boxer absolutely cares you had a long day at work… they’re happy to discuss it after a long walk, and an extended play session in the yard! Boxers NEED stimulation and exercise, and their happiness depends on it. Are you ready to make that a priority?
-
Is your home ready? Boxers can jump up to 6 feet in the air, and do best when they have a fenced in yard to run in. They need a food and water bowl stand- they are susceptible to bloat and need their bowls elevated. They often require a crate. They will need a leash, collar or harness, dog bed, toys, treats, high quality dog food… their own wing of the home, a private jet… you get the idea!

Do you understand the process? Do you want to foster, adopt, or foster to adopt? Have you completed the application? Are you ready for the home visit? Are you ready to wait patiently while CBR works their magic and matches you with the “right wigglebutt?”
-
Do you know what qualities the “right wigglebutt” needs to have? What age boxer would you prefer? Will you consider special needs boxers? Do they need to be pet friendly? Dog friendly? Would you prefer a male or female?
-
Are you ready to help them get settled? Boxers need decompression time. They need patience, love, and it may take them some time to integrate into your home. Will you be able to reach out if you have questions or issues? Does your immediate schedule allow for this?
-
Are you ready for the LOVE? Your boxer will be your best friend. Up your phone storage and warn your friends and family- the boxer photos are coming! Home sick- your boxer is there. Had a bad day? That’s OK, your boxer waited all day just for you. Need someone to talk to? They are great listeners. This is absolutely a serious commitment, but the rewards more than outweigh the effort.
