Dog’s Name: Abe

Dog’s Approximate Age: 7 – years old

Gender: Male

Dog’s Size: Large (70lbs plus as adult and healthy weight)

Dog’s Weight: 80 pounds

Good with small dogs?: Abe seems to be good with small dogs although due to his size, he may overwhelm them. His initial reaction is a bit dominant but then settles down.

Good with big dogs?: Abe seems to be good with large dogs although he’s always been on a leash during introductions due to his TPO surgery. He anxiously wants to meet every dog he sees. Like with the small dogs, he’s a bit dominant but then lays down.

Good with cats?: Has not been cat tested.

Good with kids?: Abe has been introduced to an 8-year-old neighbor and did great with him. Due to Abe’s size and tail, smaller kids might not be a great fit. The shelter did say he lived with a family, but they had no idea on ages of children.

Any medical issues?: Abe had TPO knee surgery the first of July and rehab has gone very well. Final surgical follow up visit is the first week of September. Hopefully, he’ll be cleared to be off leash so he can run and play again. Other than that, he has no health conditions.

Crate trained?: Yes.

House trained?: Yes.

Heartworms?: No

8/26/2024:  Abe’s name should be Mr. Happy. Abe came to CBR with a leg injury the weekend of Memorial Day. He had several vet evaluations resulting in surgery. Throughout the entire process, he’s been easy going, loving and full of joy. His favorite thing is people – he wants to greet everyone, get scratched and acknowledged. Abe is deaf (I still talk to him all the time), so he does have a little anxiety when left alone. He’ll bark for a minute and then find his bed or the couch. He might do a little counter surfing or exploring if he’s home alone so don’t leave the garbage unattended! Abe has been with me for almost 3 months and just yesterday, brought me a stuffed ball to play fetch for the first time! Abe’s good on walks, he’s up to 30 minutes twice a day for rehab. He loves to smell everything – so important for a deaf dog to experience the world. He’d love a yard to be able to run but also to lay/relax and enjoy the sunshine. He may not look like he’s smiling in his pictures, but he is grinning and wagging that tail all day long!

6/26/2024: I can’t say enough about how loving and good-natured Abe is. He was immediately comfortable with me and my adult kids. He greets visitors with a huge tail wag asking for cuddles, kisses and play time. I forget that he is deaf and talk to him all the time. He walks well on a leash and just loves being outside and watching everything…extremely curious. Abe even likes going to the vet! He is the true definition of a “gentle giant”.  Abe will be your most loyal, loving, and best friend!
