How did you get started with CBR? I have always loved Boxers. My dad had a boxer growing up and I loved hearing stories about their special bond. We were looking for a boxer to adopt and came across Carolina Boxer Rescue. We attended a few events to learn more about the organization and realized it was a great fit for us, them and most importantly the dogs. We adopted CBR alum Athena in December 2016. She was an amazing dog but unfortunately we lost her due to a blood cancer in June 2021.
How long have you been with CBR? Since December 2016
What is your role/roles? We are currently a foster family for Dottie. We decided to foster instead of adopt so we can help multiple dogs.
What has been the best part about volunteering with CBR? The best part is knowing we are helping a dog become the best dog they can be, showing him/ her unconditional love and helping them find their forever home.
What has been the hardest? It is hard to see a dog being timid and trying to figure out if he/she can trust you. We don’t know a lot about their background so a slow introduction to a new environment and people is a must. We have only fostered dottie and she is still with us through her knee surgery and recovery but I imagine saying goodbye will be hard.
Best memories? When you see a dog start to come out of its shell and show you its personality. That is when you know you are doing something right and they feel comfortable and loved.
What advice would you give to someone thinking about volunteering? There are good days and hard days but the good days always outweigh the challenges. Be patient with your foster. There are many roles within a rescue organization. Find out what is needed and match your talents and time accordingly.
