25 Years of Carolina Boxer Rescue: Then, Now, and Everything In Between – January 2026

25 Years of Carolina Boxer Rescue: The Story Before the Story

Filed by Jonah, Senior Paw-spondent

Twenty-five years ago, Carolina Boxer Rescue began with a handful of determined people, a lot of heart, and a belief that boxers deserved a second chance—even when they came with baggage, medical needs, or a reputation for being a little extra.

I went looking for a master plan. A roadmap. A very official binder. What I found instead were people who kept saying “yes” when a boxer needed help, and then figured out the rest as they went.

Somehow, that was enough to build something that’s lasted a quarter of a century.

The Early Years: Founder-Led, Heart-Driven

For nearly 25 years, Carolina Boxer Rescue was led by its founders and directors. No formal board, no layers of governance, just an unwavering commitment to the dogs and the people who supported them. Decisions were made around kitchen tables, in foster homes, and during late-night conversations after long rescue days.

Two of CBR’s founders remain actively involved today, carrying forward the mission they helped create while mentoring the next chapter of leadership.

What didn’t change, then or now, was the focus on doing what was best for the dogs, even when the work was hard or the resources were limited.

Growing Pains and Growing Impact

As the years passed, Carolina Boxer Rescue grew not only in size, but in reach, and responsibility. More dogs needed help. Medical care became more advanced, and more expensive. The rescue expanded across multiple states, and behind the scenes teams formed to handle intakes, vetting, transport, fundraising, adoption coordination, and daily operations.

With growth came complexity. And with complexity came the need for stronger structure, clearer processes, and long-term planning.

What began as a founder led rescue evolved into a multi-state organization powered by volunteers who stepped into specialized roles to keep everything running.

I was told this also meant more spreadsheets. I have not been allowed to step on those.

A New Chapter: Governance and Sustainability

In late 2025, Carolina Boxer Rescue took an important step forward by establishing its first governance board. This board was created to support long-term sustainability, provide oversight, and help guide CBR into its next phase of growth.

The formation of the board doesn’t replace the heart of the rescue—it strengthens it. With founder leadership, experienced directors, and a governance board now working together, CBR is better positioned to serve dogs and supporters for many years to come.

The People Behind the Rescue

CBR has always been, and will always be, about the people who show up.

Fosters who open their homes. Volunteers who drive hours for a transport. The vetting team who track treatments and surgeries. Donors who make lifesaving care possible. Directors and board members who think not just about today, but about the future.

This rescue runs on teamwork, trust, and a shared belief that every boxer deserves care, dignity, and a real chance at a better life.

Then vs. Now

What’s changed over 25 years? A lot. What hasn’t? The mission.

Carolina Boxer Rescue remains committed to stepping in when boxers need help, providing medical care, finding the right homes, and supporting adopters long after the paperwork is signed. The tools are better. The processes are clearer. The inboxes are definitely fuller.

But the heart of the rescue, doing right by the dogs, is exactly the same.

Looking Ahead

This anniversary isn’t just about looking back. It’s about looking forward.

Throughout the year, we’ll be sharing stories, memories, milestones, and reflections from the people who helped shape Carolina Boxer Rescue into what it is today. Some will be joyful. Some will be bittersweet. All of them are part of the story.

If you have a favorite memory, milestone, or reflection from the past 25 years, we’d love to hear it. You can share it by emailing newsletter@carolinaboxerrescue.org, and your story may be featured as part of our anniversary series throughout the year.

Thank you for being part of Carolina Boxer Rescue—whether you joined us 25 years ago or found us more recently. The work continues, and we’re grateful to have you with us for the next chapter.

Filed carefully. Read twice. Approved by the humans. Possibly drooled on once.
