Boxers & Water Activities

Has this question been weighing on your mind? Are you wondering if that tiny waist and substantial chest makes for a good swimmer or a dog that will sink like a rock? As boating and swimming season gets underway, we wanted to provide safety information about Boxers and water to ensure your Boxer (and all pets) are safe when they join in on family water fun.

According to the American Boxer Club, “…[Boxers] are not natural swimmers. Because they lack much of a tail, and have a deep-chested build, swimming doesn’t come as easily to boxers as to other dogs. However, plenty of boxers can learn to love the pool—with patience, and plenty of treats.” Even if a Boxer can swim, remember that the breed can be at increased risk while swimming due to the structure of their shortened snout.

It’s important to know if your dog is comfortable in the water before heading out on a boat or letting your dog leap off a dock. Whether your dog can swim or not, the most important piece of equipment is an approved dog life vest. Check out this article to learn what to look for when selecting the right one. When you are ready to try some water activities with your Boxer, follow these safety tips from the American Boxer Club:

  • Never leave your dog unattended around the pool.
  • Teach him the entry and exit.
  • Swimming is hard work, so keep sessions short and do not overtire your Boxer.
  • Use your dog’s favorite floating toy to help motivate him to get in the water.
  • Try to let your Boxer swim with other accomplished swimming dogs. He will learn from them as well.
  • Boxer’s will ingest a lot of water while swimming. It is a good idea to allow your dog ample opportunities to relieve himself, long after he has left the pool or lake.

Here’s some additional safety tips for taking your dogs boating. As with swimming, having your dog wear a life vest is the first and most important step.

  • Have a “dog overboard” plan and make sure someone on the boat has eyes on the dog. You need to pay attention to your dog to ensure they don’t fall or jump off but not get distracted if you are the driver.
  • Make sure they have lots of fresh water to drink and shade.
  • Always ensure you have a leash with you and use it as needed.
  • Help your dog get used to the boat by taking some short trips initially.
  • Make sure you have a plan for potty breaks and bring clean up items for your pet’s waste. Many pets know they shouldn’t do their business on the boat so they may become anxious if they need to go and try to find a way off so stops are important.

We know Boxers love to have fun with their families, and water activities in the Summer can be a great way to cool off together. Following these tips can help ensure that everyone, canine and human, has a fun and safe Summer!
