Exercising With Your Dog

As the weather warms up, you and your dog are probably ready to get out and enjoy Spring. Here are 7 exercises to help you both get fit and healthy. Remember to check with your vet and your doctor if you or your pet haven’t been active in the past.

  1. Walking—If you haven’t been walking, start by going approximately two blocks for each ten pounds your dog weighs. For example, for a 50 pound dog, start out walking 10 blocks. As long as you both are doing well, add a few blocks each week and build up to 30 minutes each day. Don’t forget to download the ResQwalk app, select CBR as your favorite charity, and turn it on when you walk. Your miles will add up and CBR earns money! https://bestfriends.org/resqwalk

  1. Running—Some breeds are better at running than others. Many dogs will love running and look forward to it. If your dog doesn’t want to do it, he may not be having fun or he may be uncomfortable or experiencing some pain. If unsure, check back with your vet.

  1. Fetch–Many dogs love to play fetch, but some dogs may need to be taught. While your dog is chasing the ball, you can do squats or arm exercises and burn more calories!

  1. Doga—Yoga for your and your dog improves strength and flexibility, and it also increases your bond with your pet. Check out more information online at https://www.gaiam.com/blogs/discover/5-benefits-of-doga-for-you-and-your-dog

  1. Swimming—Remember that not all dogs know how to swim, so a dog life vest is recommended. Not only is this good exercise, but you can have lots of fun splashing around on a hot day with your dog!

  1. Biking—Some dogs can be trained to run with a bicycle, but it’s important to always keep safety in mind. Wear the proper equipment, and start by walking with your bike and your pet on a leash on the other side. Remember, if your dog isn’t well trained or is easily distracted, your leisurely bike ride could change very quickly if he sees a squirrel he prefers to chase!

  1. Hiking—There are many great hiking trails and parks that welcome dogs. Know the rules, pick up after your pet, and keep your dog on a leash for everyone’s safety. It’s great exercise and a wonderful way to enjoy nature!

Exercise is important to keep both you and your pet healthy. Keep your pet’s abilities, limitations, and interests in mind so you will both enjoy your activity time together.
