Summer Safety Tips for Your Boxer

Summer is here, and that means more sunshine, outdoor fun, and plenty of tail wags! But while warm weather brings joy, it also brings a few seasonal risks for our beloved boxers. As temperatures climb, it’s important to keep your pup cool, safe, and healthy. Here are a few tips to help you and your boxer make the most of the summer months:

1. Watch Out for the Heat

Boxers are brachycephalic (short-nosed) dogs, which means they can overheat more quickly than other breeds. Always provide access to shade and fresh water, and avoid walking during peak heat hours (typically 11am–4pm).

2. Protect Those Paws

Hot pavement can burn your boxer’s paw pads in just seconds. A good rule of thumb? Place the back of your hand on the pavement for 5 seconds—if it’s too hot for you, it’s too hot for your dog. Opt for grassy paths or early morning/evening walks.

3. Never Leave Your Dog in a Parked Car

Even with windows cracked, temperatures inside a car can skyrocket in minutes. Heatstroke can set in quickly and can be fatal. If your pup can’t come inside with you, it’s best to leave them safely at home.

4. Be Mindful of Water Play

Not all dogs are natural swimmers—boxers included. Always supervise your dog around pools, lakes, or the ocean, and consider a canine life vest for added safety.

5. Watch for Signs of Overheating

Keep an eye out for excessive panting, drooling, lethargy, vomiting, or bright red gums—these can be signs of heatstroke. If you suspect overheating, move your dog to a cool place and contact your vet immediately.

Summer is the perfect time to make memories with your boxer, and with a little extra care, you can ensure those memories are full of fun—not emergency vet visits.
